About me

  • I am a PhD student at the School of Mathematics, University of Edinburgh under the supervision of Julian Hall. My second supervisor is Jacek Gondzio. I am working on large-scale linear programming problems.

News

  • 07.05.2018: My summer internship in the Google Paris Operations Research team started.
  • 25.05-04.06.2018: I spent two weeks at ZIB and continued to work on the new presolve project.
  • 20-30.03.2018: Julian Hall and I visited ZIB. Together with the German team we did some work on HiGHS and I joined the development of a new presolve project.
  • 06-09.03.18: A group of four from Edinburgh University, consisting of Julian Hall, Jacek Gondzio, Spyros Pougkakiotis and myself, visited the team in Google Paris.
  • Google Paris

Discussions of different problems happened over a couple days along with introductions from both sides. Fortunately, I even got a chance to meet in person Vera Baturina, the engineer who will supervise me over the summer.

  • 18.12.17: I attended the Optimization Methods in Software 2017 conference.
  • 23.11.17: Julian Hall and I visited Nick Gould in Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, located near Oxford, England. We had a discussion and Nick gave us very valuable advice on Augmented Lagrangian and Penalty methods.
  • 22.11.17: I attended the Preconditioning Iterative Methods in Optimization workshop. It was organized by Jacek Gondzio and Alemseged Weldeyesus and held in the School of Mathematics, University of Edinburgh.
  • 09-13.10.17: Julian Hall and I visited Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB or Konrad-Zuse-Zentrum für Informationstechnik Berlin).
  • ZIB

We were invited by Ambros Gleixner to work together on integrating our linear solver with the Germans’ mixed integer solver SCIP. We gave talks at a seminar, followed by a few days of collaboration at the research lab. As a bonus the visit coincided with this year’s Festival of Lights in Berlin.

  • 04-09.09.17: I attended a NATCOR course in Combinatorial Optimisation.
  • Southampton

I attended a NATCOR course in Combinatorial Optimisation. The NATCOR CO lectures were very interesting and the course well-organised. I got a chance to meet students from all over Europe. Colleagues from my research group also attended and we had a lot of fun exploring Southampton.

  • 19.08.17: Julian Hall and I visited NTT Data Mathematical Systems Inc. located in Tokyo, Japan.
  • NTT Data Mathematical Systems Inc.

We were invited by the company to spend a week in Tokyo. The optimization team needed to improve the efficiency of their simplex solver and we provided advice on the matter. Our hosts gave us a very warm welcome and a great introduction to the wonders of Japanese culture.

  • 27.05.17: I attended the SIAM Conference on Optimization 2017.
  • 16.05.17: Julian Hall and I visited Argonne National Labs located in Chicago, USA.
  • Argonne

We were invited by Sven Leyffer to Argonne to give talks at a seminar, followed by an afternoon of discussions. Researchers raised issues they have had related to linear programming and we talked about potential solutions. The team moved over to the local microbrewery at the end of the day.

  • 29.03.17: I attended the Advances in Preconditioners Workshop. It was organized by Jacek Gondzio and Lukas Schork and held in the School of Mathematics, University of Edinburgh.
  • 27.03.17: I gave a talk on Improving Feasibility of the Starting Basis for Simplex. The talk was at the Linear Programming Seminar, organized by Xavier Cabezas and held in the School of Mathematics, University of Edinburgh.
  • 21.03.17: Julian Hall and I visited Google’s office located in Paris.
  • Google Paris

We discussed results and implementation details with their Optimization team. Additionally, we talked about future collaboration opportunities. Following the discussions we even had some time for sightseeing!
